Plywood is the structural core of all custom furniture. Knowing the differences between MR, BWR, BWP, and engineered boards will help you make smart choices that extend the life of your furniture.

1. Commercial / MR Plywood

MR stands for Moisture Resistant. While it resists humidity, it cannot handle direct water exposure. Use MR plywood for dry areas like living room TV units, bedroom wall paneling, bookshelves, and study tables.

2. BWR & BWP Plywood

  • BWR (Boiling Water Resistant): Exterior-grade plywood, highly water-resistant. Perfect for wardrobes and vanity sides.
  • BWP (Boiling Water Proof): Also known as Marine Plywood. Can withstand direct boiling water testing for 72 hours. Mandatory for kitchen cabinets, under-sink cabinets, and bathroom woodwork.
Warning: Beware of cheap local brands calling MDF or Particle Board "Waterproof MDF." True durability comes only from layered hardwood plywood cores.

3. MDF vs. Particle Board

Particle board is the cheapest option, made of compressed wood chips, prone to sag under heavy load. MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is made of wood fibers, offering a super smooth surface ideal for painted shutters or CNC routing designs, but swelling instantly if exposed to water leaks.
